Valorisation of polylactic acid (PLA) waste: A comparative life cycle assessment of various solvent-based chemical recycling technologies

چکیده

To understand the environmental impacts of various chemical recycling solutions for handling end-of-life (EoL) post-consumer (PC) PLA waste, a comparative assessment was conducted. A life cycle (LCA) applied ISO standards 14040/44. The functional unit study treatment one tonne PC-PLA waste. four EoL scenarios investigated were: (1) hydrolysis, (2) alcoholysis using methanol, (3) ethanol and (4) direct incineration scope considers emanating from: (a) collection transport (b) its pre-treatment, (c) respective production recyclates (e) substitution conventional products with recyclates. results show that all three technologies perform better from an perspective as compared to In particular, processes considerable benefits across impact categories such global warming, acidification, eutrophication, ionising radiation, photochemical ozone formation, resource use (energy carriers; mineral metals) respiratory inorganics. On other hand, valorisation lactic acid via hydrolysis shows highest concerning land water scarcity. case potential on depletion, alcoholysis-using methanol performs worst. Through obtained subsequent discussions, this establishes need instituting strategy create resource-efficient future involving different sectors along value chain.

Polylactic acid (PLA)

This website provides an excellent overview of PLA as a polymer, its properties, and manufacture. This web article describes the production of lactic acid from biomass by microbial fermentation coupled to a poly-merization process to make PLA. The article is a bit dated and its industrial projections are now seen to be a bit over-optimistic. NatureWorks is the company that started large-scale p...

chemical recycling of polycarbonate waste using conventional heating and microwave assisted method

Comparative study of municipal solid waste treatment technologies using life cycle assessment method

The aim of the study is to analyze three different waste treatment technologies by life cycle assessment tool. Sanitary Landfill, Incineration and gasification-pyrolysis of the waste treatment technologies are studied in SimaPro software based on input-output materials flow. SimaPro software has been applied for analyzing environmental burden by different impact categories. All technologies are...

Life Cycle Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste Management in Tehran

Due to increasing solid waste generation and their significant impacts on human health, environmental assessment of the management and disposal methods become more and more important. There are various disposal methods which are the combinations that originate from a wide range of solid waste management systems. In this study, municipal waste of Tehran (which totals to 7507.5 tons/day) is asses...

On a New Neovaginal Prosthesis of PLA (Polylactic Acid)

Vaginal dilation is proposed as the first choice treatment for patients with vaginal aplasia, but many patients with MRKH or Rokitansky syndrome (and cases with CAIS) may require a vaginoplasty. It is also necessary to make vaginoplasty in patients with vaginal or cervicovaginal atresia with a functional uterus before performing an utero-neovaginal anastomosis, also in trans-sexual men.
